Enel’s Capital Markets Day will be a sustainable event. This is in line with the Group’s business model which adheres to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through the Resex Rio Preto-Jacundá REDD+ project, which was created by the Brazilian company Biofilica, Enel will contribute to conservation in the Amazon forest, the world’s largest tropical jungle and a principal source of oxygen for the planet. This action aims to offset CO2 emissions deriving from the past year’s main financial marketing events.
REDD+ stands for “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” and is a project developed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to encourage the conservation and sustainable management of forests in developing countries. The Rio Preto Jacundá project, in particular, works to support development in the rubber tapper communities who live in a 95,000 hectare area in the state of Rondônia, in northwestern Brazil, where the Amazon forest is at increasing risk of degradation, and with serious consequences for the local biosphere. This initiative is in line with Enel’s commitment to SDG13, “Climate Action.”
Biofílica Environmental Investments, which was founded in 2008, is a Brazilian company in the environmental service sector. It invests in scientific research and in the social and financial development of communities living in these areas.
Again this year, we are supported by the international agency Mediatree. It is a pioneer in the organisation of sustainable Investor Relations events and has calculated the CO2 emissions produced during the past year’s financial marketing events, roadshows and Capital Markets Day 2018 as being the equivalent of 187 tonnes.
The methods for calculating emissions
Carbon footprint is commonly used as the parameter for estimating the emission of greenhouse gases caused by a product, event, service or organisation. This is generally expressed in tonnes of equivalence to CO2, and serves to determine the impact on climate change of what has been produced.
Various tools were used to calculate the quantity of CO2 produced by the Enel Group: the Carbon Footprint Calculator measured the impact from airplane flights and ground transportation. The My Climate tool calculated emissions linked to the event locations, while the Tourism Partnership estimated those deriving from hotel stays.
